This week in Sunday School:  At the Jordan River, led by Joshua, Israel leaves the desert in this week’s Sunday School lesson “Entering the Promised Land.”  In Baptism, led by Christ, we leave behind the desert of sin, death, and Satan so we may enter into the promised land of heaven.  Parents might ask, “What did the Israelites create to remind them of their crossing into the Promised Land?  What do you have to remind you of your Baptism?”

Next Week in Sunday School:  In Sunday School next week, students will study “The Fall of Jericho.”  We are reminded that God is our mighty fortress who delivers us from the false walls of our sin and saves us in the true Joshua, (Jesus) that we might become and remain His people.  Ask students, “What did the people of Jericho think their wall (fortress) would do for them?  What does God our Fortress do for us?”

Rudy Beyer: A Celebration of Ministry

The Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield community is invited to participate in a special ceremony taking place next month. Former Grace Lutheran Church Pastor L. Rudy Beyer is the honored guest at a “Celebration of Ministry” as he transitions to the next phase of his ministry.

The celebration will take place Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Amherst, Mass., located at 867 N Pleasant St. in Amherst. Pastor Beyer served as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield from 1974 through 1993, and among his many accomplishments during that time he helped to organize the West Springfield Parish Association. For more, read the full history of Grace Lutheran Church.

This week in Sunday School: Today’s Sunday School lesson “The Bronze Serpent” is one of the more challenging stories in the Old Testament. Just as the bronze serpent was lifted up to heal and save the Israelites, Christ was lifted up on the cross to heal and save us from sin, death, and the devil. Ask students, “How did God rescue people bitten by the serpent? How does God rescue you?”

This week in Sunday School:  Sunday school students will study “The Twelve Spies in Canaan”.  We are like the faithless Israelites, doubting and revolting against God’s ways and direction.  God forgave them and He forgives us our sins of disbelief through Christ who fought sin for us on the cross.  Parents could ask, ” How do we sometimes doubt God?  What has God promised us?”

Special rededication ceremony at Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church

The congregation of Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield offers its heartfelt congratulations to our neighbors at Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springfield in anticipation of the rededication of its new sanctuary. Bethesda has been without its sanctuary following a fire nearly two years ago, but we’re overjoyed that this weekend will mark a new beginning for Bethesda.

The Grace Lutheran Church community has been cordially invited to the Service of Rededication of the Sanctuary of Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at 4:00 p.m., at 455 Island Pond Road, Springfield. Guests are invited to stay for refreshments following the worship ceremony.

The Needlers want you!

The Needlers are back! Grace’s sewing and knitting group this week resumes its weekly gatherings, taking place each Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. for about two hours in the parlor at Grace Lutheran Church in West Springfield.

The group knits, sews, crochets, quilts and mends, often donating its efforts to local groups or presents them as gifts for newly baptized babies.

The Needlers are eager for new participants. No experience is required (the group is happy to teach its craft to others) and you don’t have to be a Lutheran — all are welcome!

Learn more on our Needlers page or call the church office at 413-734-9268.

Sunday, September 7, 2008, Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost
8:45 am – Chancel Choir Rehearsal
9:30 am – Worship Service, Sunday School

Today in Sunday School:  This fall, Sunday school students return to their study of the Old Testament.  We begin by studying “Worship in the Tabernacle.”  In the tabernacle, God dwelled with His people, cleansing them and making them holy through the blood of sacrifices.  In Christ, God now dwells among us, cleansing us and making us holy through His blood, sacrifices for us on the cross.  Ask students, “Why did God direct the people to build the tabernacle?  Where do we worship God today?”
