Book of Faith initiative takes root at Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield

All are welcome to join Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield during the month of March as it celebrates the scripture by participating in the ELCA’s Book of Faith initiative.

Book of Faith is a five-year program among “members, congregations, synods, church-wide ministries, and institutions and agencies of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America” to reengage the Bible and its teachings, and applying its lessons in our everyday lives.

Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield will hold a special three-part Bible Study program, taking place at 11:00 a.m. at the church on Mar. 1, Mar. 15 and Mar. 19. This three-session study explores how the Bible came into being with an introduction to the creation, collection, and canonization of scripture. Participants will discover where the Bible came from, how it was put together, and the contribution the Reformation made toward scriptural literacy.

Mark your calendars for Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield’s next book discussion, taking place Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in the church parlor.

This month’s featured book is “The Shack” by Wm. Paul Young.  This book tells the story of Mack Phillips, who took his three children on a camping trip while his wife visited her sister.  While Mack went to help his two older children when their canoe overturned, his youngest daughter, Missy, was abducted by a known child predator.  Evidence of Missy turned up in an abandoned cabin and everyone knew the worst had happened. For the next four years, “a great sadness” fell over Mack and his family until a note from God showed up in his mailbox, inviting him back to the shack for the week-end.  What he finds there will change his life forever.

Rummage sale Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield

Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield will hold a Rummage Sale Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Proceeds, which will benefit the missions of Grace, will be matched with funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. 

Donations can be brought in during the week of Feb. 21st from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily and on Friday, Feb. 20 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  For information on donating clothing or other pre-owned items, scheduling a pickup of items or volunteering to work the event, contact the church office via email or call 413-734-9268.

Join us for Tropical Sunday: Feb. 8, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield

Those who cannot afford the time or money to fly to the islands and escape the cold of winter are cordially invited to come to Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield this Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. for the annual Tropical Sunday worship celebration.

The temperature will be up in the flower-bedecked sanctuary as we celebrate the Lord with a grand selection of Latino and African hymns, followed by a coffee hour with fair-traded coffee and home-baked goods containing tropical fruits and ingredients.

The Back Row Band will bring out the bongos and cruise-wear attire is encouraged for everyone attending. Anyone wishing to contribute to the coffee hour is invited to bake with pineapple, coconut, bananas or any other tropical ingredient.
