Please complete the following survey, which will be used to identify important trends, characteristics and needs of the congregation. All responses are anonymous.

Particpants invited to tornado recovery event

Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield invites the local community to participate in an important tornado recovery event.

Raising Hope Together, the greater West Springfield long-term recovery group, is sponsoring Stronger Than A Tornado II, a cleanup and rebuilding event, taking place Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The help of as many skilled and non-skilled participants is needed for debris removal and cleanup, as well as to repair, rebuild and stabilize homes and neighborhoods in West Springfield. Even though it’s been nearly a year since the tornado, much work is left to be done.

Be one of ‘God’s Gardeners’

Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield is looking for individuals who are looking to have fun in the sun this summer with Grace’s many new gardening projects.

All ages and skill/mobility levels are needed. Whether you are a farmer, a hobbyist, or even a scourge to all things green, we need you! Please come to our first planning meeting, April 29, 2012, after worship to plan and coordinate our efforts.

Join us for ‘Tropical Sunday’ for Feb. 19

Tropical Sunday, an annual tradition at Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield, will be celebrated Sunday, February 19th at the 9:30 a.m. service.

The sanctuary will be decorated with tropical plants and flowers, parishioners are encouraged to wear cruisewear fashions and the music, provided by Grace’s Back Row Band, will have a Latin beat. Everyone will be given a lei to wear when they enter the sanctuary. Coffee hour, which follows the service, will feature baked goods with pineapple, coconut and other tropical flavors.

If you want a break from winter and you’re not able to head to warmer places, come and join the celebration of Tropical Sunday. Everyone is welcome! For more information, contact the church at 413-734-9268.

Initial bishop election meeting Sat., Feb. 4

Bishop Margaret Payne

Members of Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield and all Western Massachusetts ELCA churches are invited to attend the special New England Synod conference meeting to discuss the election of a new bishop. Bishop Margaret Payne will retire Aug. 31, 2012, after serving 12 years as bishop of the New England Synod.

The meeting will take place Saturday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Springfield, starting at 9:00 a.m.  This is one of several regional meetings taking place in January and February as the second step in the process of electing of a new bishop for the New England Synod. Rev. Alice Kerr Laird to visit Grace Sunday Jan. 15

Rev. Alice Kerr Laird

Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield is pleased to welcome the Rev. Alice Kerr Laird this Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, as a special guest. Laird will conduct the Sunday morning worship service, which begins at 9:30 a.m.

As an Associate to the Bishop of the New England Synod of the ELCA, Pastor Laird specializes in congregational care efforts for Central, Southeast and Western Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Her other duties include serving as executive for administration synod stewardship specialist,  Synod Assembly committee, Healing the Wounds, and liaison to interim pastors.

Celebration to honor Rev. Robert Villani

In honor of Rev. Robert Villani’s 50th anniversary of church service, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Holyoke is inviting all to a celebration of Pastor Villani’s ministry. The event will take place Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. with a worship service followed by a catered buffet lunch.

Winter rummage sale: Saturday, Feb. 26

Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield’s winter rummage sale will take place this Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Proceeds will benefit church programs.

Donations of clothing, housewares and small furniture items will be accepted at the church Monday – Thursday, Feb. 21-24 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and Friday October 22nd from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. You can also call Martha at 568-8033 for pick-up.

Volunteers are also needed to help with setup for the sale Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Special events this weekend at Grace

As Christmas approaches, a series of special events will take place this weekend at Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield:

  • Decoration of the Grace sanctuary for Christmas will take place Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at 12:00 noon. Volunteers are needed! Help is greatly appreciated.
  • The annual children’s Christmas pageant will take place Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010 during Sunday worship (children and their parents are asked to arrive at least 30 minutes early).
  • The annual cookie exchange will be held immediately following worship Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010. To participate, bake four (4) dozen cookies (if you wish to make more than one type of cookie, feel free to do so, but please make four dozen of each type of cookie), and bring an empty tin or box to put your cookies in to take home.
