The 2009 CROP Walk will take place this weekend, and Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield will host the event for churches in the towns of West Springfield and Agawam, Massachusetts.
The walk takes place Sunday, May 17, 2009; registration begins at 12:00 noon and the walk starts at 1:00 p.m. Come out to make a donation to help the fight against worldwide poverty or simply support those who are participating in the walk.
The event seeks to raise money to help Church World Service, a cooperative ministry of nearly three dozen Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican denominations that provides sustainable self-help and development, disaster relief and refugee assistance in countries around the world, focusing specifically on local and global grassroots, hunger-fighting efforts (CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty).
The 4.8 mile route will go down Westfield St., take a right on South Blvd., down Park Ave., left passed the First Congregational Church, then hook up onto Elm St., over to Kings Highway and finally up the hill and back to Grace Lutheran Church. This year CROP walks across the country will share more than $3.7 million with food banks, pantries, community gardens and other local efforts nationwide. Volunteers are also needed to help along the route to pass out water at rest stops.
