Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield will hold it’s next book club discussion on March 28th, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in the church parlor. The book to be discussed will be “Someone Knows My Name” (also known as “The Book of Negroes”) by Lawrence Hill, a Canadian author.
The story covers six decades of the life of Aminata Diallo, who was kidnapped in Africa when she was eleven years old, enslaved on a South Carolina plantation where she worked in the indigo fields and as a midwife. She escaped during the Revolutionary War and helped pen the “Book of Negroes”.
In this captivating novel, Hill portrays one woman’s strength in the face of adversity and brings to life crucial and little-known chapters in world history.
The book won the overall Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book, the Rogers, Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, The Ontario Library Association’s Evergreen Award and CBC Radio’s Canada Reads. Other books by Hill are “”Any Known Blood” and “Some Great Thing”.
The community at large is invited to attend this book discussion. For more information, call Carolyn at 739-0790.
