The next monthly book club discussion at Grace Lutheran Church West Springfield will take place Sunday, February 6, 2011. The featured book will be “The Housekeeper and the Professor” by Yoki Ogawa.
The book was translated by Stephen Snyder, who teaches Japanese literature at Middlebury College in Vermont.
Seventeen years ago, in 1975, the professor was involved in an automobile accident that caused traumatic head injury. While he can remember everything prior to that time, his short-term memory only lasts eighty minutes. A young housekeeper, with a 10-year-old son, is hired to care for him and every morning as the professor and the housekeeper are introduced to each other anew, a new and beautiful relationship blossoms between them.
It is an enchanting story about what it means to live in the present, and about the curious equations that can create a family. Since 1988, Ogawa has published 20 works of fiction and nonfiction, and she has won Japan’s most prestigious literary awards.
All from the community at large are welcome to attend the discussion, which will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the church parlor.
